  • Most tourists do not require to obtain a tourist visa in a Ecuadorian Consulate or Embassy prior to entering to Ecuador.  Once you arrive in the country, immigration officers will give you a tourist visa.  The length of your tourist visa will depend on the amount of days you are planning to stay in the country. We recommend that you ask for a one-month visa at least.

  • Please note that the official currency of Ecuador is the American dollar. We recommend that you get your currency exchanged in your home country, because you'll get a much better rate than doing it in Ecuador.

  • Do not forget to lock your bags and keep your keys at hand in case a customs officer asks you to open your bag.  If your bag can not be locked, then make sure that your bag is firmly tied-up.

  • Do not put valuables in side pockets or pockets that can be easily accessible.

  • We recommend that instead of a normal suitcase, you bring a back-pack and a carry-on bag.  A 50 Liter capacity back-pack will be big enough to carry all your stuff.  We will be moving around a lot and you'll appreciate having a comfortable and light backpack on your shoulders.

  • You might find it very useful to bring a small day-pack as your carry-on bag.

  • It might be handy to pack an extra duffel bag with you, so that you can use it to pack in your souvenirs for your trip back home.

  • If you are traveling from Toronto to Ecuador during the summer season (June to Aug. 16), you shouldn't be paying more that $1000 CAD for your two-way plane ticket.  During the low season you can get a Toronto-Quito-Toronto plane ticket for $860 CAD or less.  WE have been able to get tickets for as low as $760.00 CAD

  • Continental and American Airlines fly to Ecuador making a connection in the United States (usually in Miami, Houston or Newark).  Continental Airlines offers a cheaper deal (around $50 CAD less) than American Airlines; however, Continental makes an additional stop in Colombia.   American Airlines usually has two flights to Ecuador one arriving at Quito's airport around 7:00 pm and the other arriving around 11:30 pm.   Continental Airlines arrives at Quito's airport by 11:00 pm and then flies to Guayaquil's airport arriving around 12:00 am at this airport.  Just recently Delta Airlines has begun to fly to Quito and Guayaquil.  heir prices area reasonable but be willing to fly all night during you Quito-Atlanta (USA) return trip.

  • A cab from Quito's airport to a hotel located in Quito's downtown costs around $5.00 USD (night rate).  In the worst case scenario you should not pay more than $10.00 USD.  However, note that by law all cabs should turn on the "taximeters" every time they pick up a customer.  If traveling for the first time to Ecuador it may be wiser to arrange for somebody to pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel.  Ecuador Tierra Viva Travel Company does provide transfer services in Quito.  To learn about our transfer services please contact us.

  • Please note that the "Departure from Ecuador Tax" went up from $31.60 US to $40.70 USD.  This tax is payable prior to boarding your plane back home and is payable only in cash.  Thus make sure you have this money available in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.

  • A very important fact to note is that the Galapagos Islands are a part of Ecuador's national territory and they are located around 600 miles away from the country's coast line.  Thus, in order to go the Galapagos Islands you need to take a plane from either Quito or Guayaquil.  The plane flight takes around 1.5 hours and it costs around $350.00 USD.  Only Ecuadorian air carriers fly to the Galapagos. Also, it is important to note that in order to get in the Galapagos Islands you need to pay a park entrance fee of $100 USD cash.  Both, the plane ticket and the entrance fee to the Galapagos Island are not included in most tour packages to the islands.
